In today's school environment, students need to feel valued and supported. They need to know they have a unique contribution they can offer to their family, friends, and the world at large. They often face difficult family and individual issues, and they are left to work out these issues alone. The support systems previously provided by family and school counselors are often no longer in place.
Enter Challenge Day. Supported by both an adult Circle of Change made up of community professionals and a Staff Change Circle at the local school, the students are offered a day-long rally called "Challenge Day". During this rally, students learn how to communicate, address prejudices, see students talk freely, and be a support for each other. They bring their issues out to the open in group discussions, they see other people who are willing to support them, they see staff who want to offer support, and they have fun in the process.
The experiences the students have during a Challenge Day rally prepare them to better support each other and create the kind of postive school community environment they are looking for.
Several years ago the work of Chalenge Day came to the attention of Oprah Winfrey. She liked what she heard about the organization, and she offered her camera crew for a week to attend both a Staff and Student Challenge Day rally and see first hand what Challenge Day is all about. Her interest resulted in an hour-long program presented on her TV program Oprah, showing Challenge Day in Action. Check it out by clicking on the link below.
